In October last year, Apeiron. reported on Taylor Swift’s sexual assault lawsuit against former radio DJ Robert “Jackson” Mueller. For the full details, read the post here.
Swift says Mueller ‘took his hand and put it up my dress and grabbed onto my ass cheek and no matter how much I scooted over it was still there.”
In September 2015 Robert “Jackson” Mueller sued Taylor Swift for slander. He claims the accusations he faced from her security after the incident resulted in his being banned from future concerts and later, his dismissal from the radio station.
This week Swift begun trial, where she is expected to testify, according to Elle. Mueller is reportedly seeking at least $2.3 million for damages stating”accusations he faced from her security after the incident resulted in his being banned from future concerts and later, his dismissal from the radio station. ”
In characteristically headline worthy style, Swift has countersued him for a grand total of $1.
This may seem cocky- Swift’s net worth for 2017 is a cool $280 mill – but the intention is quite laudable.
Her attorney, J. Doug Baldridge, explains: “She’s not trying to bankrupt this man.. She’s just trying to tell people out there that you can say no when someone puts their hand on you. Grabbing a woman’s rear end is an assault, and it’s always wrong. Any woman—rich, poor, famous, or not—is entitled to have that not happen.””
Groping is a form of sexual assault, and should be addressed and treated as such. Many, if not every woman, has experienced this sort or some form of sexual assault and can relate to Swift when she described the incident, saying: “I remember being frantic, distressed, feeling violated in a way I had never experienced before.”
Furthermore proving that Swift’s only intention in this case is justice – as an example for other women to stand up against this any sexual assault- it has also been reported that any damages she may be awarded from the trial will be donated to women’s rights charities.
Still, while her reasoning is altruistic, it cannot be overlooked that everyday cases of sexual assault can vary in severity and therefore, indeed, range in amount when seeking damages. Swift’s sum is one that only privilege/class can afford. Being a public figure, it is an important example of how one can handle situations like this with dignity and maturity by not sinking to her assailant’s level. For that, this is a cautionary tale of class as well- and how it will affect and play out differently for every woman.
We hope that this case will encourage women to speak up, nonetheless.
